Good vs bad alt text

Descriptive, specific, gives context. Screen readers can paint a clear picture.

Too generic or just a filename. Provides zero value to accessibility or SEO.

Conveys the data story. Users get the key insight even without seeing the chart.

Just the file extension. Misses the entire point of alt text for data visualizations.

White and red sneakers on a wooden floor with natural sunlight streaming from a window

Sets the scene. E-commerce product images benefit from contextual descriptions.

Photo of shoes

Vague and unhelpful. Doesn't differentiate this product from any other shoe photo.

What is alt text?

Alt text (alternative text) is an HTML attribute added to image tags that describes the image content. It is read by screen readers for visually impaired users and displayed when an image fails to load. Search engines also use alt text to understand image content, making it a key accessibility and SEO practice.

  • Keep alt text under 125 characters. Describe the image content naturally — don't stuff keywords. Include relevant context when it adds meaning to the page. Decorative images should use alt="" (empty).
